How to brew Taiping Houkui?
Since the leaves of Taiping Houkui are long and flat, we recommend that you soak them in a straight glass, while you can also appreciate the unique beauty of the leaves. To bring out the best flavor of the tea, use 80°C water. Put 3 grams of Taiping Houkui tea in a straight glass, then slowly pour in hot water and brew for 1 minute. Alternatively, you can first add hot water to the glass, and then slowly put the tea leaves into the cup one by one. This may have a more beautiful effect. In this case, the soaking time can be increased to 1 and a half minutes. You can gradually increase the soaking time and brew up to 3 times.
The Origin of Taiping Houkui
The origin of Taiping Houkui can be traced back to the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty (1851-1861). During this period, Houkui ancestor Zheng Shouqing opened up a tea garden on the banks of the Machuan River. The high mountains and dense forests, fertile soil and foggy climate here are the perfect environment for growing tea. The tea leaves he carefully made are flat and straight, with a fresh and refreshing taste and a charming orchid aroma. He named it Taiping Jian Tea .
Taipingjian tea is recognized as the predecessor of Taiping Houkui. For hundreds of years, the tea produced under the guidance of Zheng Shouqing and his descendants has always been the highest standard of Taiping Houkui.
By the middle and late Qing Dynasty (1875-1908), Taiping tea had become widely popular. Many teahouses and tea shops were established in cities such as Nanjing, Yangzhou and Wuhan. The demand for Taiping tea surged along the Yangtze River, and it became a sought-after product by tea merchants and tea lovers.
During this period, Nanjing Jiangnanchun Tea Purchasing Station played an important role. In order to enrich the variety of tea, improve product quality and obtain higher commercial profits, they selected the best quality buds and leaves from Taipingjian tea, packaged them separately, and shipped them to Nanjing, where they were sold at a high price. This move was a huge success and attracted the attention of tea lovers.
The real transformation of Taiping Houkui is due to the innovative thinking of local tea farmer Wang Kuicheng (nicknamed Wang Laoer). Wang Laoer, who lives in Hougang, is famous for his rich experience in tea production and excellent tea processing technology. Inspired by the practice of selecting the best buds and leaves after tea production, he realized that it is more efficient to start selecting when picking fresh leaves .
In the high-altitude tea gardens of Phoenix Mountain, Wang Laoer carefully selected the most robust and upright buds and leaves. Through precise and dedicated craftsmanship, he produced tea with excellent specifications and high quality, which was known as “Wang Laoer Kuijian”.
Due to its high quality, the tea is considered the pinnacle of tea. In addition, because its maker is named Kuicheng and it is produced in the Taiping area, especially the Houkeng and Hougang areas, it is named “Taiping Houkui”.
Today, it has become one of the most luxurious gift teas in China. In 2004, Taiping Houkui won the Tea King Award. In 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao presented this tea as a gift to Russian President Putin. Taiping Houkui tea has a mellow aroma and has the effect of relaxing muscles and activating blood circulation.
The Legend of Taiping Houkui
According to legend, there lived a white-haired monkey couple in Huangshan Mountain. They gave birth to a little monkey. One day, the little monkey strayed into Taiping County and got lost in the fog. The monkey father immediately set out to look for the child. After a few days, the old monkey was exhausted from searching and died in a mountain pit in Taiping County.
A poor man who made a living by picking wild tea and herbs found the dead monkey and kindly buried it on the hillside. He planted a few wild tea trees and wild flowers as a marker for the grave. Just as he was about to leave, he suddenly heard a voice: “Old man, you did a good thing for me, I will definitely repay you.” Seeing that there was no one around, the old man did not think much about it at first.
The following spring, the old man returned to the hillside to pick wild tea and found that the entire hillside was covered with lush tea trees. As he pondered this miracle, the same voice said, “These tea trees are my gift to you. Take good care of them, and you will never have to worry about food and clothing again.”
The old man then realized that the tea tree was a gift from the monkey god. From then on, the old man had a good tea mountain and no longer had to climb mountains to pick wild tea. In order to commemorate the monkey god, he named the hillside “Monkey Mountain”, his residence “Monkey Pit”, and the tea picked from Monkey Mountain “Monkey Tea”. Due to the excellent quality of the tea, it was later named Taiping Houkui.
